Basketball

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opposing team’s hoop or basket. The game is played on a rectangular court, with a hoop elevated at each end. The primary objective is to score by successfully making field goals (shots from within the court) or free throws (unopposed shots from a designated line).

Basketball involves various skills including dribbling, shooting, passing, and rebounding. The game is fast-paced and emphasizes teamwork, strategy, and athleticism. Points are awarded based on the distance from which a shot is made, with shots from beyond the three-point line earning more points than regular field goals.

The sport is governed by a set of rules known as the official basketball rules, which cover gameplay, fouls, and other regulations. Basketball originated in the late 19th century and has become one of the most popular and widely played sports globally, with professional leagues such as the NBA (National Basketball Association) in the United States and various international competitions.
