Basketball

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opponent’s hoop or goal. The game is played on a rectangular court with a hoop at each end, positioned at a height of 10 feet (3.05 meters). Points are scored by making field goals, which are worth two or three points depending on the player’s distance from the hoop, or making free throws, which are worth one point each.

Basketball emphasizes skill, teamwork, and strategy, with players using various techniques such as dribbling, passing, and shooting to advance the ball and score. The sport is governed by a set of rules known as basketball regulations, which dictate the gameplay, fouls, and scoring.

Originating in the United States in the late 19th century, basketball has grown to become one of the most popular sports worldwide, with professional leagues, collegiate competitions, and international tournaments. The NBA (National Basketball Association) is the most prominent professional league in the world. Basketball also plays a significant cultural role, influencing fashion, music, and social dynamics, while promoting values such as teamwork, discipline, and competition.
